At Wah Kwong, we take the view that the strides we make towards sustainability are most effective when they are connected. Our sustainability strategy has been developed with the aim of tackling the substantial environmental challenges facing our industry, supporting social and economic initiatives, and demonstrating good corporate governance, using the UN sustainable development goals as a framework for our actions.

Among the 10 newbuilding orders to be delivered between 2025 and 2027, four Ultramax vessels will be dual‑fuel‑ready and equipped with the smart ship digital operation and support system. We are also exploring the feasibility of installing wind‑assisted propulsion systems, focusing on improvements in EEDI. Our entrance into the LNG sector, contributing to China’s LNG supply chain, is also a key pillar of our business.

Wah Kwong embeds sustainability into its culture, aligned with our ESG strategy. Teams across the Group take ownership of voluntary initiatives, with clear responsibilities driving change throughout the organisation. Our Technical Committee advises on technologies that keep our fleet compliant and future‑ready as regulations tighten. We actively engage with energy efficiency solutions, installing retrofits that reduce emissions and ensuring our ships remain compliant over time against the backdrop of increasingly stringent regulations.Venture Marine Services supports clients navigating evolving standards, while Ship Management ensures full ISM Code compliance for ship safety and crew welfare. We have strategic initiatives beyond our core shipping operations. We collaborate with Gazelle Wind Power and Cicada Carbon. Gazelle Wind Power is developing a floating offshore wind turbine platform that unlocks access to deep‑sea wind resources. Its innovative design addresses cost and the logistical challenges of assembly, installation and servicing. In Zimbabwe, our cookstove project with Cicada Carbon provides efficient cookstoves to rural households, many of which lack access to grid‑based power. We are proud to support a project that lowers emissions and deforestation and achieves seven UN‑recognised Sustainable Development Goals. Through these partnerships and initiatives, Wah Kwong strives to lead in sustainability, innovation and social impact across the maritime industry.

We work with longstanding partners such as Wellness at Sea and The Mission to Seafarers to strengthen our efforts on crew wellbeing, providing a safe and supportive environment. Crew training conferences are becoming more inclusive across nationalities, gender and ranking. Wah Kwong has also stepped up its shore staff programmes, from raising awareness to instilling habitual changes in personal lifestyle, focusing on marine conservation and community engagement.

Through strategic industry–academia partnerships and training initiatives, we are connecting classroom learning to real‑world maritime operations.
Since 2020, Wah Kwong has collaborated with PrimCrew Global Pte. Ltd. and two higher education institutions on innovative education projects. We contribute to curriculum design, organise ship visits, and provide support including pastoral care and career guidance to enhance students’ competencies. We have also cooperated with Shandong Jiaotong University and Qingdao Harbor Vocational and Technical College.

In recent years, Wah Kwong has been introducing diversity into its sustainable crewing strategy. We have strengthened efforts on multiple fronts, including equal opportunities, welfare and the development of maritime talent.
Wah Kwong has officially become a member of the All Aboard Alliance. Through various insightful reports and webinars, we have learned from other member companies and adopted a systemic framework in listing key challenges faced by seafarers, followed by guidelines to help the shore team provide effective support. We have increased onboard welfare funds across all vessels under our management to provide greater support for crew wellbeing.
Complementing these efforts, our “Wellness at Sea” programme—developed by our long‑term partner Sailors’ Society—provides interactive mental‑health resources. Activities are designed to build resilience and strengthen responses to challenging situations. The plan ensures prompt support for any seafarer in distress or crisis.

Wah Kwong is committed to giving back to the community beyond maritime by fostering cultural sustainability and diversity. This commitment has come to life through impactful initiatives developed in collaboration with the Hong Kong Culture Festival and key partners including the Liaoning Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Northern China Society.
